Have you heard about the latest craze in Plumas County? Brightly-painted quilt block patterns are adorning barns and buildings throughout the county. It's all part of a movement started by a Quincy quilter who wanted to model the barn quilt tours developed in several rural communities across the country. The wooden quilt blocks vary from 8x8 feet on barns to 2x2 feet on homes.

And now, note cards featuring the barns and barn quilts have been produced from paintings done by local artist Nancy Bohne. They've been selling well as Christmas gifts! The notecards are for sale here at the Visitors Center (at the airport in Quincy) as well as at a few local stores. Eight different cards each depict a different barn/quilt scene; they sell in packs of four for $4.95 per pack. We even have this darling miniature barn on loan for displaying the cards.

Plumas County's barn quilt project is continuing to evolve as a self-guided driving/biking tour, with more than 30 painted barn quilts on display, so far primarily in Quincy and Indian Valley. Here's a map of the Quincy ones. Check them out on your next visit up!

November 17, 2011

Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  If you don't have any plans for dinner yet, there are several restaurants in the county that will be offering delicious homemade meals that include all the traditional side dishes and desserts.

For those of you looking for a special treat the day after Thanksgiving, on Friday, November 25th, be sure to head over to Traci's Sweet Surprises located at 503 Main St. in downtown Quincy.  Traci will be offering fresh, homemade cinnamon rolls (buy one, get the 2nd half off) along with a non-alcoholic wassail drink from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm!

November 8, 2011

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Leaf peepers have been replaced by holiday tree hunters! Christmas tree permits went on sale Nov. 1 and with snow already on the ground, people are venturing into the woods to find their perfect tree to decorate.

There's a lot of benefits to cutting your own fresh conifer for the holiday season -- starting with the fact that permits are just $10! If you've priced trees you purchase elsewhere, that's quite the bargain.

Check the list of locations for permits and find out what you'll need to bring your tree home. And plan to spend the weekend -- or at least an overnight -- and check out local eateries and stores that are in holiday mode. There are plenty of holiday events coming up in small towns throughout the county.

You may already know Joe Willis regularly contributes photos and stories to our "Bloom Blog", but did you know you that he is also an avid Entomologist, and he finds the most interesting bugs to photograph!  Here are a few recent shots along with his comments.

Per Joe "the Crab spider on Yarrow (left) and the Goldenrod Crab Spider are all the same species. It can change color, from white to yellow and back, but it takes several days to do so. It may or may not have the red stripes on the abdomen. A fascinating critter, we've often seen it in the act of devouring butterflies, bees, and other bugs."

"This is a Red Milkweed Beetle (right) on Showy Milkweed. This is a
gorgeous beetle that lives its entire life in or on the milkweed plant
."

"The Striped Meadow-hawk (left) is a species of Dragonfly. We also have Damselflies. The latter keep the wings together over their backs when landed and are a more delicate, thinner insect than the Dragonflies."

Here is another incredible picture of Frazier Falls from Diane Uchytil of Quincy.

Diane says "the falls are outstanding!!!!  You need to drive in on the Frazier Falls lower road as the upper road (across from Gold Lake.k) still has snow and is flooded.  It is so beautiful, definitely worth the drive!"

Looks like Frazier Falls is "the place to go" to right now.

Summer's finally here!

The lakes are full and the waterfalls are raging! Here's a shot of Frazier Falls on the left (on the Gold Lake Forest Hwy., accessible from Hwy. 89 in Graeagle, or Hwy. 49 at Bassett's Station) taken by Bill Obernesser, who also sent along these great photos of birds in the area.

Sandpiper, right at Feather River/Graeagle Creek.

Bill tells us a kid fishing pulled a big fat trout out of Sand Pond (by Lower Sardine Lake,  the last resort on the right on the Gold Lake Forest Hwy. just before you reach Bassett's Station) when he was there, too.

Wilson's Warbler at Sand Pond left.

If you are a bird enthusiast, we have a link on our website where we receive some wonderful reports about bird sightings from the Plumas Audubon Society that you may be interested in reading.  We have over 314 species of birds in Plumas County!

We're also hearing great reports from hikers who've followed trails to other falls.  The roads in the county are all open for travel now, however some of the resorts and trails at the higher elevations are still snow covered.  You are always welcome to give us a call at (800) 326-2247 or email us at www.info@plumascounty.org to get a current update on campgrounds and trails.

Bye Bye Birdies

Well, it was a wild time this weekend. Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe flew the coop!

Mike Nellor, who has been following the progress of the little robins (in a nest in his yard in Quincy) said "It was one short practice flight and then off into the wild blue yonder they flew Sorry about the quality of some of the pics.....................but it was 15 minutes of chaos!"

Thank you Mike for taking all of the wonderful pictures to share with us.  The kids sure do grow up fast, don't they?

And now we are wondering, and I'm sure you can see this one coming, if Mike will be suffering from "empty nest syndrome" (photo at right).

See the posts below for May 18th, May 19th and May 21st to see how this sweet story began.

Wine-tasting has come to Plumas County!

The family-owned Indian Peak Vineyards from Manton, CA (Tehama County) has opened a tasting-room and retail store in downtown Graeagle, in the building formerly occupied by Graeagle Preschool at the back of the Graeagle Park lawn.

The winery hosted a "meet-and-greet" Monday night, and will be having its grand opening this Friday.

Winery owners Donna Boots (left) and her son-in-law and daughter, Trevor and Kristy Bartlett, shown here in the tasting room greeting their first guests. The winery, founded in 2004, features several award-winning varietals, including sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, a couple of red blends, and a yummy mixed vintage port, known as "Donna's Dessert Wine."

The tasting room also features a retail store, which, in addition to wine, sells wine merchandise, olive oils, and custom-designed wine barrel fountains, according to on-site managers Kelly Roberts and Mike Zunich. There's also an outdoor seating area with firepits and live music on the weekends. Here's Trevor Bartlett telling a story in the outdoor setting.

Indian Peak Vineyards' new Graeagle tasting room will be open seven days a week, from 11 am to 9 pm. You can taste all the available varietals for $5, which also includes a wine glass! Wine is also available by the glass and by the bottle. There's also specials for locals.

For more information, contact the tasting room at 530-836-2466 and check out their website, www.indianpeakvineyards.net.

Here is the most recent photo of the baby robins from Mike Nellor of Quincy.

Per Mike "This is a picture of the team this am.  With beaks open they seem to be saying where's my breakfast!  Mom and dad have been busy with the feedings. Worms seem to be the flavor of  the day".

Notice that the pin feathers are really starting to fill in!  It is amazing to see how much they have changed just a couple of days after they hatched.

Mike said it sounded great about naming them (in a contest), although he thought Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe (named for "The Three Stooges") seem to fit them pretty well.  Since the nest is in his yard, they will henceforth be known as Moe, Larry and Curly Joe.  Stay tuned for the upcoming zany adventures of the "Three Robins".

Well, we didn't have to wait long!  Mike Nellor proudly announced the birth of three brand new robin hatchlings!    All three eggs made the transition to baby birds!  Now we will be able to follow their progress thanks to Mike.

Here is a photo of the newborns in their "nursery".  Good thing mom robin went with a neutral color theme for her nest as we don't know if they are boys or girls yet!

Hmmmm, maybe Mike should have a "name the baby robins" contest.

The local birds are taking advantage of Spring finally arriving, too.  Nests are beginning to show up around the county.   Mike Nellor of Quincy, who sent us the photos from Rock Creek earlier (on our Bloom Blog), took these wonderful shots of  robins eggs in a nest which was built in a tree in his yard. The photo below left is of the newly constructed nest, the center shot is the robin who built it, and the picture on the right of the eggs, are the result of Mrs. Robins date night out with her hubby.  Mike promised to keep us up to speed on this robin and on the progress of the little "robins to be" when the eggs hatch.

Those eggs really are "Robin's Egg Blue" aren't they?  The color sure stands out and really enhances the flowers and trees in bloom right now.  Keep your eyes open when you are out searching for  wildflowers and you may spot a nest or two yourself!

CURRENT CAMPGROUND AND TRAIL OPENINGS IN PLUMAS COUNTY

Beckwourth Ranger District (530) 836-2575

Campgrounds  and trails in the Lakes Basin area are not open currently due to inaccessibility because of snow.  The Gold Lake Highway to the Lakes Basin area has not been plowed from the Graeagle entrance off of Hwy. 89, or from the other side on Hwy. 49 at Bassett’s in Sierra County.

Lightning Tree is the only campground open (where the water system is complete) at Lake Davis in Portola.  Both Grasshopper Flat and Grizzly campgrounds, also at Lake Davis, are closed for the 2011 season while a new water system is being installed at those locations.

Frenchman Lake

The boat ramp is open at Lunker Point and the dock is open at Frenchman.

Mt. Hough Ranger District (530) 283-0555

The road to Bucks Lake from Quincy has only been plowed to the T at Haskins Valley.  There are no campgrounds or trails accessible at Bucks Lake currently, however, the Forest Service campgrounds at Snake Lake (8 miles NW of Quincy off of Bucks Lake Rd) as well as Deanes Valley (6 miles south of Meadow Valley) are both open.

Gansner Bar, Hallsted, North Fork and Queen Lily campgrounds are all open on the north fork of the Feather River on Caribou road off of Hwy. 70 in the Feather River Canyon.

Antelope Lake

The boat ramp is in the water.  Campgrounds are open except Lone Rock, which will be open around Memorial Day.

Camping isn't available yet, however, you can get to the picnic area.

Almanor Ranger District (530) 258-2141

The Almanor campground (west shore of Lake Almanor, Hwy. 89, 7 miles south of Hwy. 36) is expected to be open by Memorial Day, if not sooner.  The Lake Almanor Recreation Trail (paved, along the west shore of the lake) should be accessible for walking or biking now, but you may encounter some twigs/branches at some spots.

Warner Valley road is now open to the Lassen National Volcanic Park boundary.

Feather River Ranger District (530) 534-6500

Feather Falls Trailhead and Milsap Bar campgrounds are open. Sly Creek campground is projected to open in mid-May, but you can fish in the creek right now.  The Feather Falls Lower Loop trail is temporarily closed due to significant structural damage to the bridge. For your own safety, please stay off of the Lower Loop Trail until further notice. Little Grass Valley Reservoir area campgrounds are projected to open around mid-July (hopefully sooner).  La Porte road is not open as it has not yet been plowed from the Quincy side

NOTE:  Campgrounds at the higher elevations are opening later in the season this year due to the large amounts of snow we received this winter.  Crews need to be able to get to those locations, clean up any winter debris, get the campgrounds and restrooms in shape and get the water turned back on before they can be opened to campers.  You are always welcome to contact the ranger districts at the phone numbers listed above for any questions about trails or campgrounds in their area.

You can check winter road closures in the county to keep you updated on which roads are open and when others are expected to be.

Playing in the snow; sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling really work up your appetite!  There's just something about being in the great outdoors and expending all that energy that make you look forward to a hearty, delicious meal!

If you are out and about this coming Saturday, April 9, you can combine both snowplay and satisfy your hunger by attending the 5th Annual Taste of Plumas,  with samplings of the most sumptuous food from restaurants, caterers, and food businesses in the county.  You'll find everything from appetizers to desserts guaranteed to please everyone!

There will also be samplings from numerous wineries and microbrew beers from around the North State and beyond to accompany all of those culinary delights.

This is a very popular event and tickets tend to sell out quickly.  We recommend that you contact Plumas Arts as soon as possible at (530) 283-3402 to make sure you have your tickets.  Imagine having the opportunity to find out about all the  wonderful food we have to offer in Plumas County in one location!

While we are speaking about  food and the great outdoors, we want to be sure to let all of you fishermen know that stream fishing season officially opens on the last Saturday of this month, which will be April 30th.  We have had a great winter with all of the snow, and the streams are full just waiting for you to bring your rods and reels to get that line out into the water to bring in some of our gorgeous trout!

You can get updated fishing reports from local guides and experts on our website by clicking on the "fish" on the menu bar on the left hand side of our home page, and you are always welcome to stop in at our office by the airport in Quincy or give us a call at (800) 326-2247 to find out about the best places to fish and to buy equipment if you need it.

To all you visitors asking if we have snow ... here's some photos taken a few days ago.  Do have snow? YOU BET WE DO!!! Head for Almanor, Bucks (22 feet there), or Lakes Basin or any other high elevation for snow fun. Elsewhere, it's melting down, roads are fine!  All of the snow photos below of Bucks Lake, located 17 miles west of Quincy, were taken by snowmobiler Cobey Brown of Quincy.

January 25, 2011

We just got a great video of Sandy and Dave McKee of Quincy on a recent ice skating outing to Lake Davis in Portola (3 Lake Davis Skate 1-23-11) that we wanted to share with everyone.  What a beautiful day, and as Dave says in the video "it's like having 30 acres of Lake Davis to go ice skating on all to themselves!"  Sounds like it would also be a pretty good place to get together for a  game of ice hockey.  Round up some team mates and grab your skates, hockey sticks, pucks and don't forget to wear your protective gear.  Whether you go to ice skate or play hockey, you'll have plenty of elbow room, that's for sure!

The Visitors Bureau office is located at the airport in Quincy, so we see and meet lots of pilots who are flying in to Gansner Field to head into town for breakfast, lunch or for perhaps business purposes.  We often get calls from pilots asking about weather conditions and how the runway looks to see if they can fly in and out safely.

The exciting news is that there is now a web cam positioned on our office building with a view of the runways so that pilots can check in themselves to get data and see how things look.  You can either create an account for yourself or can sign in as a "Guest" to get an idea of what you will be able to see.

Chilly Outside? Chili Inside!  Longboard Races and Snowshoe Walks

Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Almanor Ranger District are now both offering their popular ranger led snowshoe walks.  Check our event calendar for upcoming dates and information for both the Lassen and Almanor walks.  Lassen has a walk scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, January 9th.  Meet the ranger at the Kom Ya-Mah-Nee visitors center at 1:30 pm at the south entrance to the park. Walks are 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  Snowshoes are provided for a donation of $1 (for the ranger led snowshoe walks only).  You can reach Lassen's visitors center at (530) 595-4444 X: 5133.   The Almanor Ranger District has a walk scheduled for Friday, January 14th.  Meet the ranger at the Almanor Ranger District office located on Hwy. 36 west of Chester.  Use of the snowshoes is free. The walk is from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and you will need to sign up in advance to participate.  Call (530) 258-2141 to sign up or for other questions.  Don't forget to come prepared and wear warm boots and clothing!

How about a bowl of delicious chili to warm you up?  The Chester-Lake Almanor Chamber of Commerce's first ever Chilly Chili Cook-Off will take place on Saturday, January 15th at the Plumas Bank Parking lot at 255 Main Street in downtown Chester from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.  Tasting kits will be available for purchase along with a ballot to vote for your favorite chili!  Do you have your own chili recipe that receives rave reviews from your family and friends?  You can enter the contest yourself.  Teams consist of at least two team members and will prepare 2-3 gallons of chili and serve the public while vying for the coveted trophies for People's Choice and Best Judged Chili!  Contact the chamber at (530) 258-2426 to sign up.

Sunday, January 16 (11am-3:30 pm) is the first of three Historic Longboard Ski Revival Races held at Plumas-Eureka State Park in Johnsville (near Graeagle).  Watch those wild and crazy skiers race down the oldest recorded ski racing slopes in the nation at Eureka Bowl, in period clothing on 11 to 13 foot Longboard skis!  There will be foot-stomping music, some food and drinks available for purchase (you can also bring your own food along if you like), and you might want to bring a chair to sit on to enjoy the races.  If you're feeling courageous and brave you can pay a small fee for the use of a pair of Longboard skis and participate in the races yourself (the fee is $30 which includes a Plumas Ski Club membership, race fee and ski rental fee).  Registration begins at 9 am and there are practice runs after registration. You must, however, wear period clothing like leather boots and clothing that might have been worn in the 1800's.  The races are free to spectators, so come up and have fun at an event started by the miner's who lived and worked in the old mining settlement of Johnsville in 1855.

Photographer Bill Obernesser took this gorgeous picture (photo at left) of a drive he took up to Johnsville on the way to the ski hill recently.  There are some spectacular views, not to mention the colorful clothing worn by the racers (photo below right). Bring your camera to get some great shots!

This is a fun-filled event for the whole family.  Don't forget to bring snow saucers, sleds and inner-tubes for the kids to play in the snow with.  And as always, wear warm clothing; sweaters, jackets, gloves, hats and boots to keep you comfy.

Check the weather forecast to give you a heads up as to what the weather for the events listed above will be like and also take a look at the road conditions to find the best and safest driving routes.
