Wildflower and Waterfall Self-guided Tours in Plumas County, Northern California
How to get there: Drive about six miles north of
Sacramento on Interstate 5. Take the
Highway 99 exit towards Yuba
City/Marysville. After about 12 miles,
Highway 99 north becomes Highway 70.
Drive north about 60 miles, passing
Oroville. Take the Grand Avenue exit,
and turn right. Drive one mile to Table
Mountain Road and turn left. After 0.2
miles, turn right on Cherokee Road,
following Cherokee for 6.5 miles. When
the road reaches a plateau, follow it
eastward to a posted wooden map. Stay
within fenced-off public land, which is
accessible through one of two entries at
the roadside parking area. To
leave take Cherokee Road north toward
Highway 70 and now you're ready to head up
the Feather River Canyon (Highway 70).
What to do: You can do a drive by viewing but it's recommended to walk around in the grassy fields to thoroughly enjoy the spectacular display. It's a great spot for a picnic, flying kites, picture taking or an easy walk to a waterfall (right). Waterfall directions: park in the regular parking area, go through the gate, head for the big oak tree close by, find the creek and start walking up the creek which will eventually turn into a trail. Keep walking up the creek (about twenty minutes) until you find the waterfalls. Waterfall photo is courtesy of Joe Willis. |
